Congratulations to Rachel Agnew of S1 who recently took part in the national finals of The Word Wizard Competition at The Scottish Parliament – and was placed First, in the Beginners French Competition for the whole of Scotland!
The competition provides a perfect opportunity for language teachers to address The Attainment Challenge by allowing pupils of all levels the chance to excel in language learning. Word Wizard develops skills in acquisition of vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling, recall and public speaking; not to mention the many literacy outcomes it addresses. This hugely motivating competition encourages links with other curricular areas and with health and wellbeing, culminating in a high profile celebration of language learning.
Rachel had to learn 225 French words and know how to spell every one of them in French! She has been working on this with Mr Robertson since November last year.
Over 190 pupils participated in the semi-finals which took place in March and 48 qualified for the final which makes Rachel’s victory even more impressive.
Huge thanks also to Mrs Hinchliffe who accompanied Rachel to the final at the Scottish Parliament.
